Con l'immigrato eritreo ucciso martedì, sale a 24 il numero di persone uccise nel 2008 dalla polizia egiziana mentre cercano di entrare in Israele.
ISMAILIA, Egypt, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Egyptian police trying to stem the flow of African migrants across the border to Israel shot dead an Eritrean man who tried to cross the frontier illegally on Tuesday, security sources said.
The death brings to 24 the number of African migrants killed at the border this year, and comes as both Egyptian and Israeli authorities try to tighten controls at the frontier.
Police shot the man south of the town of Rafah after he ignored orders to stop, the sources said.
Another Eritrean man was wounded in the same attempt by barbed wire along the border and was taken to hospital.
Egypt for years tolerated tens of thousands of Africans on its territory, but its attitude hardened after it came under pressure to halt a rising flow of African migrants and asylum seekers crossing the border into Israel.
Egypt cracked down in June, sending up to 1,200 Eritrean asylum seekers home despite objections by the U.N. refugee agency, which feared for their safety. Hundreds of those were then jailed in Eritrea, Amnesty International says. (Reporting by Yusri Mohamed; Writing by Will Rasmussen; Giles Elgood)
