E ora.... a lavorare!!!!!

Jailed Eritrean govt journalist goes missing - RSF

ASMARA (Reuters) - An Eritrean government journalist has disappeared inside the Red Sea state's jails after being held without trial for two years, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said on Thursday.Tura Kubaba worked for the Kunama-language service of government-run radio, RSF said.Eritrea routinely denies statements from the press freedom organisation, saying RSF is acting on behalf of world powers to sully the government's reputation.RSF calls Asmara the world's worst violator of press freedom, outdoing North Korea and Cuba."Amid general silence, a new name has been added to the list of journalists who have disappeared in Eritrea's jails," RSF said in a statement. It accused the government of building a "wall of terror" which hindered such cases coming to light.Kubaba was arrested in late 2006 and held with 2,000 other prisoners until he was transferred to an unknown location in 2007.Reporters Without Borders, quoting an unidentified source in Eritr…

Migrant boat sinks off Tunisia, 3 dead, more missing

TUNIS (Reuters) - Tunisian coastguards recovered the corpses of three illegal migrants who were among a group of more than 20 people who went missing when the small boat carrying them to Europe capsized, witnesses and newspapers said. The migrants set out late last week for the Italian island of Lampedusa, one of the main transit points for poor Africans hoping to start a new life in Europe, said newspaper Achourouk, which has good contacts in Tunisia's security services.Witnesses said the three bodies washed up on a beach in the eastern town of Chabba."I still don't know if my 18-year old son Aymen is dead or alive," local resident Tayeb ben Hussein told Reuters by phone. "What is sure is he was on that boat heading for Europe."He said his son was not among the three bodies found but that he recognised one as the corpse of another local man.Government officials were not immediately available for comment.Last year, nearly 20,000 migrants arrived in Italy by …

Onus on Ethiopia, Eritrea to resolve dispute, says top UN peacekeeping official

22 April 2008 – Ethiopia and Eritrea are primarily responsible for settling their border dispute and must follow up on the commitments they made in an accord in 2000, the top United Nations peacekeeping official stressed today.
Given Eritrea's announcement today that it no longer supports the UN peacekeeping presence, known as UNMEE, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Marie Guéhenno told reporters following a closed Security Council meeting on the situation between the Horn of Africa neighbours that "now we are reaching the end of what peacekeeping can achieve." He noted that peacekeeping can only make a difference if the countries involved have made a political commitment. Eight years after the signing of the Algiers Agreements which ended the war between Ethiopia and Eritrea, "it is essential that the parties recommit themselves to that process, that they complete what they started in Algiers," Mr. Guéhenno stated. He added that the auth…

Onorevole si dia un taglio

Pensioni da 3 a 10 mila euro al mese. Con soli cinque anni di mandato. Prese già a 50 anni.

UN council angered at Eritrea over border force

UNITED NATIONS, April 22 (Reuters) - Security Council members voiced anger on Tuesday at moves by Eritrea to force a U.N. peacekeeping mission to leave its border with Ethiopia, but postponed a decision on how to respond."The members of the council were unanimous in that the way the peacekeepers of UNMEE (the U.N. force) have been treated in Eritrea is totally unacceptable," South African Ambassador Dumisani Kumalo, current council president, told reporters. The United Nations has almost completely withdrawn some 1,700 troops and military observers from a buffer zone along the border between the two Horn of Africa rivals after Asmara cut fuel supplies to the mission.Eritrea said countrywide shortages had prompted the move, but President Isaias Afwerki said last week the continued presence of U.N. peacekeepers on the Red Sea state's border with Ethiopia, scene of a 1998-200 war, was illegal. The peacekeepers had been stationed in a 15.5-mile (25-km) zone inside Eritrea.

(AGI/AFP) - Addis Abeba, 21 apr.

ISMAILIA, Egypt, April 20 (Reuters) - Egyptian police shot and wounded two migrants from Mali and Kenya who tried to slip over Egypt's desert frontier into Israel on Sunday, security sources said.Escalating police violence at the Egypt-Israel border has left 11 migrants dead since the start of the year, while scores of others, mostly from Africa, have been detained. There exists no other border demarcation in Africa as clearly defined as that of the Eritrean-Ethiopian boundary: President Isaias

from SHABAIT.COM

Asmara, 18 April 2008 - President Isaias Afwerki underlined that there exists no other border demarcation in Africa as clearly defined and marked in the map as that of the Eritrean-Ethiopian boundary. He made the remarks in an interview he gave to Aljazeera Television that was transmitted today. The President pointed out that the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission (EEBC) concluded its mission indicating virtual demarcation on the map after waiting for five years during which the United Nations and specifically the Security Council failed to fulfill their obligation of implementing the Boundary Commission’s final and binding ruling on border delimitation that was issued on 13 April 2002 in accordance with the Algiers Peace Agreement. Stating that in line with the Algiers Agreement the task of the UN Peacekeeping Mission terminates after the issuance of the EEBC’s final and binding ruling, President Isaias underlined that the stationing of the peacekeeping mission in t…

Eritrea says UN border force not legal

ASMARA (Reuters) - Eritrea's President Isaias Afwerki has said the continued presence of U.N. peacekeepers in the Red Sea state's border with arch-foe Ethiopia was illegal, government media reported on Saturday.
The United Nations has almost completely withdrawn some 1,700 troops and military observers from a buffer zone along the border between the two Horn of Africa countries after Asmara cut fuel supplies to its peacekeeping mission.
Eritrea said country-wide shortages had prompted the move.
"President Isaias underlined that the stationing of the peacekeeping mission in the border has no legal justification as the commission's ruling has already been virtually demarcated on the map," said the Eritrea Profile, a Ministry of Information newspaper.
In November, an independent boundary commission, set up by a peace deal ending Ethiopia and Eritrea's 1998-2000 border war, marked the 1,000 km (620 mile) frontier by map coordinates.
The United Nations extended the man…

Violence against migrants at the border has escalated since the start of the year, with police killing 11 and detaining scores of others, mostly from Africa.Rights group Amnesty International has called for an investigation into the killings and says Israel has pressed Egypt to reduce the flow of people crossing illegally. The London-based rights group says thousands of migrants try to cross from Egypt's Sinai peninsula each year, with numbers rising since 2007.The migrants, including many from Sud…

Eritrea cuts diesel supplies to U.N. agencies-UN

ASMARA, April 15 (Reuters) - Eritrea has cut off diesel supplies to U.N. agencies in the Red Sea state, but the move may not be politically-motivated, the world body said on Tuesday. The step comes just weeks after U.N. peacekeepers were forced to withdraw from the Eritrean-Ethiopian border over a petrol stoppage. Eritrea says the whole country faces shortages."When we sent our cars to the petrol station, we were told that there was an order not to supply fuel to U.N. agencies," said one U.N. official who asked not to be named."Given the fuel shortages in all other sectors of the economy, it's not targeting the U.N., nor is it political," the official said, adding that the majority of the world body's long-distance vehicles used diesel. The official would not speculate on how long the cut-off might last. The Eritrean government was not immediately available for comment. All diplomats and foreign bodies receive a fuel ration each month from the government. The …
